This chart illustrates information about the number of car journeys into the city centre made by residents and non-residents between 1996 and 2005. Overall, car journeys for residents have decreased significantly, whereas car journeys for non-residents saw no change over the 9-year period. At the start, Resident car joruneys were higher, but at the end of the period, non-resident car journeys overtook them.
Resident car journeys started at just below 10, 000 per day and stayed relatively constant over the next 3 years. But in the year 2000, when parking meters were introduced into the city centre, their car journeys fell off to approximately 5000 in the years 2001, 2002 and 2003.
Additionally, the closure of Westgate Street and Park Lane due to traffic led them to reach an all-time low of around 4, 000 in 2003, 2004 and 2005. On the other hand, Non-resident car journeys started at 5, 000 journeys per day in 1996 before gradually increasing to approximately 8, 000 and remained close to that number in the next 3 years before suffering a massive drop in 2003, reaching their lowest point of 3, 000. But car journeys for non-residents resurged slightly to just under 5, 000 in 2005.
