As a result of social changes, increasingly more parents have been opting home education in preference to sending their children to schools than ever before. In my view, the potential drawbacks of homeschooling are much greater than its positive effects.
There are glaring advantages to homeschooling. One obvious benefit is that it enables both parents and their children to choose the times of their classes flexibly. When parents are not able to conduct lessons during the day, they may decide to teach their child early in the morning or in the evening after work. Another important advantage of homeschooling in contrast to public education is that it offers a safer environment for children. When children are educated at home, they don’t suffer from bullying, racism, different drugs and peer pressure. This, in turn, help children grow up without mental illness and disorders. Thanks to these distinct benefits of homeschooling, many parents choose this type of schooling in place of public schools. Nevertheless, the negative outcomes are more significant. First, it can cause a lack of social skills. Having studied at home, children cannot interact with peers and friends, thus struggling to establish and maintain healthy relationships.
This is likely to make their lives more difficult owing to problems they may face in communicating and socializing with others. In terms of necessary qualifications, unlike public education, which enables children to learn from well-qualified teachers and experts, homeschooling is likely to cause poor academic performance. This is because the average parent does not have sufficient understanding of such modern subjects as science and technology and therefore fail to teach their children comprehensively. This, 37 consequently, hinders minors from unleashing their academic potential and making constant progress. These potential drawbacks should be taken into consideration before opting for home education. In conclusion, homeschooling has both benefits, such as safety and flexibility, and drawbacks, such as social isolation and poor academic growth. In my view, on the whole, the disadvantages outweigh the advantages.
